MDI Community Sailing
Southwest Harbor
Mount Desert Island, Maine

Boat Usage The primary privilege of being a member of the MDI Community Sailing Center is, of course, the use of our sailboat fleet. If you're an experienced sailor, one of our staff will check you out, and then you are off and sailing. If you're a beginner and you wish to learn, then the opportunity to take part in our Adult Beginner Program and the Women’s Sailing Club lends the possibility of reaching helmsman status within a month. We also try our best at connecting beginners with our experienced, qualified members who are looking for partners to go sailing with. We reserve the right to disallow sailboat usage on any given day, and we have the final say on anyone becoming a qualified helmsman and gaining individual access to the sailboat fleet for usage. Not everyone is made to be a helmsman, and your safety is the number one priority of our staff. On the coast of Maine they say, “If you don’t like the weather, then wait a minute.” No truer weather statement has ever been said. Our staff is constantly monitoring our ever changing sailing conditions, and at any time we may say to return to your mooring or that the fleet is grounded for the day. At no time are members allowed to take out a sailboat without first informing an MDICSC staff member.

Our keeled sailboat fleet is at its largest size in the history of MDICSC, and we will have sailboats available most times they are requested. We only require that you call and reserve any boat at least 24 hours in advance and realize that we are operating a very large Junior Sailing Program all summer (9am–4pm Monday–Friday), and that the boat you may want to use may already be taken.

There is no additional charge beyond membership to use the sailboats, and we feel our membership usage fees are a real bargain.

2017 Sailboat Fleet

Cape Cod Bullseyes
We have six of these tried and tested 16-foot full keeled day sailors, which are the workhorse of the sailing center. They are designed for both one design racing or for a family of four to take a day sail. They also make a great boat for solo sailing. Each Friday afternoon, racing is offered through our partner, the Southwest Harbor Fleet, who has been racing the Bullseyes for over 50 years. For information on how to become involved with this friendly local club, contact our office.

Cape Dory Typhoon
We have two Typhoons day sailor versions which have a large cockpit and can comfortably accommodate five people.

Oday Tempest Our 23 foot Tempest is available for larger sailing groups and very popular with families. The tempest is a very stable sailing platform with space below for crew to escape the sun.

Luders 16
Both of our two 26-foot fiberglass Luders are classic one designs and available for more experienced members. Opportunities to race with the local MDI Luders Fleet are also available all summer.
