MDI Fall Sailing Season A Big Success

The MDI Fall High School Sailing Team recently completed a very successful season by finishing second against fourteen teams at the Chevrus Cup on the Portland Harbor.

Coach Wells Bacon Jr. was very proud of the teams performance despite light and variable winds. This falls team was a dedicated bunch of sailors and all of their hard practice after school really showed up in their improved boat handling skills. The picture at left is of the winning teams from this years Becton Cup an all girls event hosted at Maine Maritime Academy. Natalie Butler (pink shirt) and her crew Lily Liechtenstein.(purple jacket) brought home a third place finish to MDI. We look forward to seeing all the sailors again next spring!

A special thanks goes out to the volunteer parents and helpers who assisted with transportation to all the away regattas and operating support boats during practice.

MDI Sailing Team competes at SailMaine

The weather was beautiful and the breeze increased to over 15 knots as the Mount Desert Island High School Sailing Team competed last Saturday April 21st at the O’Day Trophy qualifying regatta on Portland Harbor.

The Trojan sailors were missing several key members who were still away on a spring school trip. The younger skippers filled in and were nipping at the heals of the leaders all day.

Falmouth High School, Brewster Academy (from Wolfboro, N.H.) and Manchester Essex (Mass.) High School all moved on to race Sunday at the Hyannis Yacht Club on Cape Cod in the O’Day regatta finals.

The top four from that event will head to Seattle in May and compete for the Mallory Trophy, the emblem of the national high school fleet racing championship and the nation’s oldest school sailing trophy. None of the schools that raced in Portland qualified for the nationals.
